According to the Toledo-Lucas County Library website, the Maumee branch has been a seminary, a courthouse, glass factory and, as indicated by the historic marker on the library grounds, the site of Dudley’s Massacre. Dudley’s was an ambush set by the British and joined by Native Americans against the U.S. Military during the War of 1812. Three hundred fifty U.S. military members were captured and 220 were killed.
The branch was founded when the land was donated and $10,000 was given by Andrew Carnegie, a wealthy industrialist.
